Apothecary piece is both beautiful and highly functional

Cornerstone meets the challenge of creating a custom piece that is not only beautiful but highly functional.

Project Type: Custom Apothecary Piece

Client: Tina & David Palmer

Location: Neenah, Wisconsin

Year Completed: 2024

  • For a long time, I’ve wanted a statement piece that beautifully anchored the space when you entered our upstairs loft.  It needed to be both functional and pretty.  I wanted it to feel old-world but with modern elements.

  • When Cornerstone was recommended to us, we began to see them in other places.  Since I love supporting local business and knew they were in Neenah, I decided to pop in.  I was very impressed.  You can tell instantly when you’re going to have a good connection and when the person that you quite possibly will be working with knows what they’re doing.  Troy got my vision right away and was willing to work with us and within our timeline.

  • I loved how we had the initial meeting and then went to the drawing board.  My husband David and I were able to collaborate with Troy and Stacy on the project.  David took the idea I had in my head and created a design that we were able to fine tune. Then we turned it over to Troy and Stacy.   They helped us to visualize it and see how we could make the project come to fruition. Then we had a follow-up meeting to discuss the components and to make sure everybody knew what was going on and that we were all on the same page.  It was cool how the project evolved.

Communication is a really big thing for me.  I like it when people really keep you updated at each level of the project, so you feel involved and good about the direction. That definitely happened from the get-go with this project.

  • The overall piece is quite sizeable including the top.  Troy was able to source the perfect solid slab of white oak that he used to create a beautiful book matched top. It’s cool to think about how it was a tree at one time.  There are 82 drawers, most of which are functional.  This alone is a design challenge.  All of the dove-tailed drawers are very well made and high quality along with the drawer pulls and everything that goes with it.

The other challenge was to make this piece both beautiful and functional.  We wanted it to look like an old apothecary cabinet when we weren’t using it.  But for functionality we incorporated 2 moving parts.  One side houses a desk, and the other side a sewing cabinet/work station.  Both components were designed as roll-out units.  So, when I’m using one side, I can slide it out and have room to slip in my chair.  It can then just be pushed back in when I’m done.

I love, love, love this piece. Everything about it is perfect. It’s everything we wanted.

I most definitely would recommend Cornerstone to a friend without any hesitation. The whole experience working with Cornerstone was professional, easy, not stressful and just very complete!
